Curriculum Intent

Everything is Possible – KS4 and beyond

At Sir James Smith’s School, we believe that everything is possible. Every child, regardless of background or starting point, deserves access to a high-quality education that opens doors, raises aspirations, and prepares them to thrive in the world beyond school.

Our curriculum is designed so that students connect deeply with powerful knowledge, feel committed to their learning and personal growth, and are encouraged to think creatively about the world around them. Through a carefully planned, knowledge-rich curriculum, we aim to broaden horizons and provide meaningful, memorable learning experiences that help every student to live a happy, healthy, and successful life — and to make a positive contribution to their community.

We are committed to continuous improvement. Our curriculum is deliberately sequenced to ensure that knowledge builds over time and truly sticks. We draw on evidence from cognitive science, memory research, and metacognition, to help students remember more, understand more, and apply what they know with confidence in new and unfamiliar situations.

Our approach to teaching is rooted in proven principles of effective instruction. Lessons are clear, structured, and purposeful, with regular opportunities for practice, feedback, and reflection. We use assessment carefully — not just to measure outcomes, but to ask an important question: how well has the curriculum landed for our students? This allows us to adapt responsively, ensuring learning meets the needs of every child.

Across all subjects, students encounter ambitious and meaningful content. At Key Stage 3, our curriculum is designed to build curiosity and a love of learning through rich and varied experiences, while also laying strong foundations for future study at Key Stages 4 and 5. Each subject has a clear curriculum overview and an adaptive Scheme of Learning that explains what is taught and how knowledge builds over time.

Beyond the classroom, our wider enrichment programme plays a vital role in developing the whole child. Through clubs, activities, and experiences, students grow their interests, confidence, and cultural understanding in a supportive environment. Together, curriculum and enrichment ensure that students are well prepared for national qualifications and gain the cultural capital needed to navigate and succeed in the wider world.

At Sir James Smith’s School, we teach powerful knowledge so that students can understand the world, question it thoughtfully, and imagine new possibilities. By helping students to connect, remain committed, and think creatively, we ensure that everything really is possible.
