PSHE provision at Sir James Smith’s school runs from year 7 through to year 11 and is based upon the recommendations of the PSHE Association. It aims to develop skills and attributes such as resilience, self-esteem, risk-management, team working, critical thinking and economic wellbeing. It also shares aspects of our careers education curriculum which we refer to as Futures.

PSHE lessons build upon the statutory content outlined in the national curriculum, the basic school curriculum and statutory guidance on drug education, financial education, sex and relationship education (SRE) and the importance of physical activity and diet for a healthy lifestyle. Topics covered fall into the following core themes:

  • Health and Wellbeing

  • Relationships

  • Living in the Wider World

As well as one lesson per fortnight which is built into the timetable, students in years 7-10 will also participate in one PHSE session during their tutor session. These sessions are often adapted to reflect current topics raised within our school community.
