Drama

At Sir Jim’s we understand both the importance and relevance of Drama and recognise the wide range of ways Drama can influence and develop pupils in today’s society. Drama is an exciting and creative subject that allows all students, of all backgrounds and abilities, to learn in a different and imaginative way. Students develop their confidence and performance skills while working in groups and individually.

Key Stage 3

All KS3 Drama Assessments are practical based - there is one each half term.  Even if units are spread across two half terms, students will be given a level each half term.

Key Stage 4

In Drama we do a combination of scripted and unscripted performance. You will gain valuable skills in communication and group work. At GCSE we look at a range of issues and styles ranging from serious drama to comic plays. You will also develop your written skills. Whilst exploring Drama you will create a portfolio of evidence which can be presented in different ways, using the computer, handwritten or with drawings and diagrams.

There are also opportunities for a small number of students to study sound, lighting or costume as part of their GCSE and in Year 10 the opportunity to get an extra qualification in Technical Theatre.

The lessons tend to go at a faster pace than in Year 9. We all treat each other in a friendly, supporting way, which gives every person the chance to grow and confidently explore new skills and experiences. It is important for students to enjoy performing and watch others.

What do Drama lessons involve?

The Drama lessons involve exploring issues using a range of Drama techniques. Some projects are around improvising, others around scripts. Having two lessons a week means that students develop acting skills and the quality of plays and performances improves greatly. This means that students spend a great deal of time working in small groups forming and creating ideas.

In Year 10 there is the opportunity for those taking GCSE drama to gain a NCFE level two in Performance Skills which has a point score equivalent to a grade C GCSE.

A Drama qualification is useful for many jobs. Obviously it is beneficial if you are interested in acting or working in the media but it will also help with any job that involves communicating and working with people. A Drama GCSE shows that you are self-disciplined, cooperative, creative, good at working with people and have self confidence. These are qualities that many employers would look for.
