The Governors of Sir James Smith's are delighted to announce the appointment of our new Headteacher from 1 January 2007. He is Mr Jonathan Lawrence and you will see below a pen portrait written by Mr Lawrence, which tells you something about him.
I would like to thank the staff of the school, especially the senior managers and secretarial staff, for making the arrangements for the interviews work so smoothly. We were very pleased with the students who helped with questioning as part of the tours of the school, the panel interviews and the lunch on Monday.
Many thanks also to the parents and members of the local community who came in for the presentations.
We are all looking forward to working with such an exciting and enthusiastic leader and wish him every success in his new role.

I am 46 years old and have lived in Bodmin for 16 years with my wife (and daughter). From Redruth Grammar School I went up to London University where I read Geography. After a stint in the Ministry of Defence I completed a PGCE at the Institute of Education in 1984 and started teaching in Hull; it was here where I learnt about dealing with challenging behaviour. I knew then that schools could and should be very different places if they were to impact on the lives of children and their communities.
My interest in Geography came from several inspirational teachers still teaching at Redruth School today; but my belief in the power of learning has come from working with many passionate and dedicated teachers. After working in six schools, four in Cornwall, I know that I am very much a 'school's person'. I enjoy the every day interactions and relationships that exist in community schools. Schools are quite simply the most exciting places to work in - I believe very strongly in the notion of a community of learners where the quality of relationships is of paramount importance to all.
I know that good leadership makes organisations better places in which
to work not only in terms of productivity but also in terms of the quality
of life.
The Spring Term 2007 will now begin for students on Tuesday 9 January.
This is to allow the staff of both primary and secondary schools to work
together on the ideas for the All Through Learning Centre. An open evening
for parents and members of the community will also be held - details to
follow.
